For one more day- Book review..

ISBN: 978-0-7515-3753-6
Pages: 200.
Year : 2006.

This book was written by Mitch Albom who also wrote '5 people you meet in Heaven'.

This book can mean different thing to different people. Based on the perception and the stand a person looks from. Its about a guy by the name of Charley Benetto who since young looking for love or be accepted by his father. His parents were divorce when he was young. Before the divorce, his father always wanted him to play baseball. He made the team and played in the 'World Series' once. But an injury caused him to give up the game for good.

He was married and had a daughter. Everything was fine until his mother passed away. He was not there when the mom died. He was else where. His life started to go down hill from there. Felt the guilt for not being there, started drinking and it got worse till the wife divorced him. She took the daughter with her.

His only companion from then on was his drinks. One day he received a letter and some pictures from his daughter. The daughter got married but he was not invited. They were afraid he might create a scene there due to his condition. That was the straw that broke the camel's back. He felt his life was over and not worth living and therefore wanted to end it.

So he drove back to his hometown, to his mom's house (while drunk). He and his sister never sold the house her mom used to lived. While on the way,he had an accident (self accident). He was thrown out from the car but was still ok even though in pain. He got up and continued his journey by walking.

When he reached the old house, he was surprised that it was clean (no one had stayed for the past 8 years), he thought, must have been the cleaner his sister hire to clean the place once in a while. There were food in the fridge and cabinet. He thought some one must be staying there. And suddenly he heard a voice calling his name. It was his mother.

He thought to himself, it can;t be. It was really his mom, looks the same as she was the last time he saw her. On her 79th birthday. The mom asked him to spend a day with her.

That one day he spent with his mom, answered all his questions from the day their parents were divorced. He never realised that his mom sacrificed so much for him and his sister. Whether he was seeing a ghost or not, people they met for that day when he spent with his mom were real.

"What follows is the one seemingly ordinary day so many of us yearn for: a chance to make good with a lost parent, to explain the family secrets and to seek forgivness."

The writer did great in writing this story cause it could be any one of our stories he is writing about. Every one of us looks for love and acceptance from our parents, family and society. And also each family has their family secrets.

I recommend this book (for those who have not read it), share it with your love ones. Have a discussion about it over tea or coffee. I am sure you will enjoy it.

For those who have children, love them for who they are because they are God's wonderful gift.

Take care and God bless.
